Holiday Safety Tips to Remember – Home Security

Did you know that the holiday season is the busiest time of the year? Due to the hustle and bustle of the season it can become easy to neglect home security. Whether you’re planning on staying home or traveling this season here are a few tips that will help you to properly secure your home.

Hide the holiday goodies.

Don’t display wrapped presents near a front window where a burglar can spot them out. After the holiday reconsider leaving boxes for pricey electronics by the curb. It is best to break down the boxes and keep them inside the trashcan. Leaving them out will broadcast what you have in your home.

Avoid leaving packages outside:

Package theft runs high during the holiday season! If you know you will not be available to receive your package ask the carrier to hold the package or leave it with a trusted neighbor.

Reduce the appearance of an unoccupied home.Burglars will scour neighborhoods in search of unoccupied homes during the holidays. Reduce the appearance of an empty house by setting timers

on lights, televisions, and radios to turn on at appropriate times. It is also best to ask a trusted neighbor or friend to take in your empty trashcans, and collect mail and/or newspapers.

Keep your traveling plans offline.

It may be tempting to share pictures and news of your vacation online, but this makes your home a potential target for burglary. It is safer to refrain from sharing vacation news until you return home

Be sure to arm your system! Crime statistics show that homes with security systems are often successfully burglarized because the system was not armed at the time of the burglary. Prepare for your trip by arming your alarm each time you leave your home.

Utilize yard signs.Research shows that 60 percent of burglars will bypass homes that have yard signs broadcasting that an alarm is on the premises. Be sure that your Valley Alarm yard signs and window stickers are displayed before you leave for the holidays. Please contact us if you are in need of yard signs or stickers.

Keep your home well lit.

Extra exterior lighting is always encouraged, but it is an even better idea around the holiday season. Installing a porch light or motion detection light in dim areas will discourage burglars from approaching you home. If you plan on being out the entire evening, leave on your holiday lights especially around the windows to give the impression that someone is home.
