Picture a receiving lead badging in to open dock door 4 near midnight. He's been on the crew for six years, his credential is current, and the access log records exactly what you'd expect: one scan, one name, one timestamp.
What the log can't tell you is whether that door stayed propped after the scan, or whether anyone walked through behind him without badging at all.
Warehouse access control systems restrict entry to loading docks, dock doors, pedestrian entrances, and secure inventory areas through card readers, keypads, or mobile credentials, creating an auditable record of who accessed each area and when.

Warehouse Access Control Starts With More Entry Points Than You Think
Ask a facility manager how many doors need access control, and you'll usually get the dock count. Then you walk the building.
There's the man-door beside each dock position, the one crews use so they don't have to raise a rolling door for a single pallet. There's the pedestrian entrance on the office side, the driver restroom corridor connecting the yard to the warehouse floor, the yard gate, the inventory cage, the IT closet, and whatever door the smokers use because it's closest to the break area.
Each of those is an access decision. Most of them are made once by whoever had the key at the time and never revisited.
The zones worth controlling separately are the ones where the loss would hurt: high-value inventory cages, returns and reverse-logistics areas where product sits unbooked, and anywhere the shipping paperwork is stored. Blanket access across a whole building means a temp hired for peak season has the same door rights as your inventory manager.
What Kind of Credential Actually Survives a Dock
Every credential type works in a demo. They behave differently on a dock at 5 AM in January.
Keypads are cheap and glove-friendly, which matters in cold storage. They're also the easiest to defeat socially. Codes get shared, written on the frame, and passed to the next shift. A keypad tells you a code was used, not who used it.
Cards and fobs give each person their own credential and a clean log. They also get lent out and left in a jacket at home. They work well where turnover is low, and the door isn't outdoors.
Mobile credentials over Bluetooth, NFC, or QR run on the phone in someone's pocket. People don't lend those. Provisioning and revoking happen remotely, which is the part that matters in a building that hires forty people for Q4.
Biometrics take the shared-credential problem off the table, since nobody hands a coworker their hand. Fingerprint readers struggle with gloves and grime on a dock. Palm and face are available on enterprise readers, and face recognition mounted outdoors has to account for glare, so a reader under an awning or on the shaded side of the building will read better than one facing afternoon sun.
Readers at yard gates and dock exteriors need an outdoor rating. A reader that fogs, corrodes, or fails in direct Valley sun turns into a propped door fast, because crews will always route around a door that stops working.
The Badge Log Tells You Who. The Camera Tells You What.
This is the part that turns an access log into evidence.
Access platforms pull camera video into the door event, though they get there differently. The Propped Door Beats Every System You Buy
Every warehouse has one. The dock man-door with a pallet block against it, or the rear exit someone wedged open because the reader is slow and their hands are full.
A credential system can't stop that by itself. Nothing about a card reader knows the door is standing open. What closes that blind spot is a door position sensor, a magnetic contact mounted on the door and frame that tells the panel whether the door is open or shut, independent of whether anyone badged.
With that contact in place, a door propped past a set interval triggers a held-open event rather than a silence that lasts until morning. A door opening without a credential generates a different event, because the panel can see a door that went from closed to open with no authorized scan behind it.
The distinction matters at a dock, where doors legitimately stand open for an hour during a load and then legitimately close. The decision of which doors get contacts and what interval is worth alerting on comes down to how each door is actually used.
The Failed Scan Nobody Looked At
Access systems generate a lot of events, and most of them are somebody badging in and getting a green light. The useful ones are the failures.
A card that isn't assigned to anyone gets used at a dock door. A credential that was deactivated last month gets tried at 2 AM. Those show up as failed access events, and on Brivo you can pull them out of the stream by asking for them in plain language rather than building a report. A dropped card in the parking lot and a former employee testing whether their badge still works look identical in a log nobody reads.
Reader health belongs in the same bucket. Readers wired the old way with Wiegand only talk in one direction, so the system can't ask a reader whether it's online or push updates to it. Readers on OSDP talk both ways, so you can see in the system that a door reader is down instead of hearing about it from the crew three days later.

One Door, Four Doors, Twelve Sites
Access control scales in a way that trips people up, because the hard part isn't the doors. It's who manages them.

High Turnover Is the Real Reason Keys Fail
Warehouses run on seasonal labor, temps, and contractors. Mechanical keys don't.
For distribution centers with high employee turnover, electronic access control eliminates the security risk of unreturned physical keys by enabling instant credential deactivation when an employee leaves.
When someone doesn't return a key, you've got two options, and both are bad. Rekey the cylinder and reissue to everyone, or accept that an unknown number of copies exist for a door you can't account for. Most facilities pick the second option by default, one departure at a time, until no one can say with confidence who can open the building.
A credential gets deactivated remotely, before the person reaches the parking lot. The door stays exactly as secure as it was that morning.
